Instrument Flight Training

Becoming an instrument-rated pilot is one of the best ways to become a safer, more knowledgeable, and professional pilot. Instrument training will teach you how to fly the aircraft precisely, by reference to the instruments, and allow you to fly in the clouds! You will become a more confident, skilled, and safe aviator as you learn the intricacies of instrument flying.

Becoming an instrument-rated pilot is a must for students that wish to become commercial pilots. For aircraft owners, it allows for lower insurance rates and grants you more freedom when flying trips. Even if your intentions are only to fly in visual flight conditions, the weather may change at your destination airport or while en-route. An instrument rating will allow you to continue your flight under instrument flight rules.

Our Instrument Training Program

Our instrument training program is designed to help you master the art of single-pilot instrument flying. We do this by using our online ground school, professional instructors, simulators, and modern aircraft. Studying for your instrument training can be intimidating. Thankfully, our on-line program helps you navigate and understand the information related to instrument flying. Our FAA Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) are there throughout the process to make sure you know the material and clarify any questions you may have. We also make use of simulators throughout the instrument program. Simulators allow us to cut down costs and provide more efficient training. Our IFR capable DA-40 is equipped with a G1000, autopilot, and constant speed prop. The DA-40 is a cost-effective way to become familiar with glass cockpits and technically advanced aircraft (TAA).

Dual Enrollment

Most of our Community College of Beaver County students are dual-enrolled in both our instrument and commercial program. Doing this allows us to make the best use of training time in both programs. We can accomplish early commercial lessons in the DA-40. These lessons help you get a feel for the airplane and G1000 while satisfying commercial lessons’ requirements.

Part 61 and 141 training

We offer part 61 and part 141 instrument training. Choosing which one is best for you will come down to your current experience and your intentions.

Commercial Pilots and Community College of Beaver County Students (CCBC); part 141 training is required for graduation from the CCBC Professional Pilot course.  Our part 141 instrument program is a requirement for CCBC students to qualify for a restricted Air Transport Pilot certificate.  This will allow you to become an airline pilot with lower total flight time.

Aircraft Owners and Hobbyist; Part 61 may be right for you. However, Part 141 is still a great option. It comes down to your current experience and what your plans are. We would be happy to discuss the best option for you.

FAA Minimums; Part 61 vs. Part 141

On average, our part 141 students take their instrument check ride with roughly 36 to 38 hours flight time in their instrument training

Part 61 time requirements;

  • 50 hours of cross-country time as pilot in command.
  • 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, 15 of which must be with an authorized flight instructor.

Part 141 time requirements

  • 35 hours of instrument training

*These requirements are simplified to show time differences and do not reflect all items required. To see all requirements, see Title 14 CFR 61.65 and Part 141 Appendix C.

Requirements for Instrument Rating

You will need to have at least a private pilot certificate to begin working on your instrument training. You will need to pass a written test before taking the instrument check ride. Once you have finished the training program and are ready, you will take a check ride with an FAA examiner. The check ride will consist of a flight and an oral portion.
